The warriors hired to protect the secrets of Awamori were highly trained in the local martial arts of Chinese influence and Ryukyu refinement. This was the origin of karate. Okinawa is home to three of its original forms — Naha-te, Shuri/Tomari-te and Uechi-ryu.
